If you’ve ever ended your day realizing you barely drank a drop of water, you’re not alone. Working from home makes it easy to forget basic needs like hydration…until your body reminds you.
For me, that reminder came in the form of abnormal kidney blood test results. My doctor asked how much water I drank daily… and I couldn’t give a straight answer. I thought coffee counted (it doesn’t). That wake-up call taught me how to stay hydrated while working from home.
So today, let’s talk about how to stay hydrated while working from home – and how to make it click in your daily routine.
1. Create “Water Cues”
One of the best changes I made was keeping water in sight—literally.
A full bottle on my desk became my visual reminder to drink.
Other tricks that work:
- Set reminders every hour
- Drink before each meeting
- Keep a refill bottle within reach
Bonus tip: Decide what container you actually enjoy drinking from.
I like bottles with a narrow sip piece; some prefer straws or glasses. When it feels natural, you’ll reach for it more often.
Small cues lead to lasting consistency.
2. Add Flavor Without the Sugar
If plain water bores you, make it something to look forward to.
Try:
- Lemon or cucumber slices
- Ginger water (soothing, anti-inflammatory, and great for digestion)
- Herbal teas or mint infusions
- Electrolyte tablets for hot days
When I added lemon and ginger to my jug, hydration became something I craved, not something I forced.
3. Set Mini Hydration Goals
Don’t aim for perfection—aim for progress.
Try this:
- 1 cup after waking up
- 1 cup before breakfast
- 2 cups before lunch
- 2 after lunch
- 2 between 3–6 PM
Breaking it up like this keeps your hydration steady and your energy levels consistent throughout the day.
4. Pair Movement With Water Breaks
Every time you stretch or walk around, take a sip.
And while you’re on a Zoom call—mute your mic and take a quick drink. No one will know, and your body will thank you.
Hydration + movement = a perfect combo for sustained focus and energy.
Stay Hydrated While Working From Home – Why Its Important
When you’re remote, you move less and get fewer “natural reminders” to drink – no water cooler chats, no walk to meetings. But even 1–2% dehydration can cause:
- Fatigue and brain fog
- Irritability and stress
- Headaches or poor focus
Aim for 2–3 liters (8–12 cups) daily, adjusting based on your size, climate, and activity.
I fill a large jug every morning before I log in. Seeing it half-empty by lunch keeps me accountable and reminds me I’m taking care of my body while I work.
Working from home doesn’t mean neglecting yourself. Staying hydrated keeps your brain sharp, your body happy, and your day productive.
So drink up, take a sip between calls, and—make it click.
